It's simple. INDEX doesn't care if your data is laid out in a column (a vertical range) or in a row (a horizontal range). Or if it's both in rows AND columns, i.e., a 2-dimensional (rectangular) range. Just give it the appropriate cell reference (e.g., A1:A6, A1:F1, A1:D3).

Watch out! Â MATCH only works on 1-dimensional ranges, i.e., a single row OR a single column.
Uncle Joe says: I left the header row out of the INDEX search in this example because, when you search Excel Tables by name (i.e., named reference), that header row is excluded by default. This approach works for those and regular range tables.
